The New Jersey Devils need a successor to Martin Brodeur, and on Sunday they went after a strong candidate.

In what was the most surprising move of the first round of the 2013 NHL draft at Prudential Center, the Devils traded their first-round selection, the ninth overall pick, to the Vancouver Canucks for goalie Cory Schneider.

"It's exciting to come to a great organization like the Devils that have been good for 20 years," Schneider told The Record. "I'm from the East [Marblehead, Mass.], so it's nice to come to a team closer to home."

Schneider played 30 games for the Canucks in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, posting a 17-9 record, including five shutouts and a 2.11 GAA.

The 27-year-old Schneider is expected to help the Devils segue into the post-Brodeur era. Brodeur, who is 41 years old, has one year left on his contract and will be entering his 21st season. The duo likely will split time as part of a rotation.
