Division hands Plainedge first defeat
Matt Santorfo induced a game-ending double play to cut off the tying run at second, earn the save and lift No. 7 Division (17-6) over previously undefeated Plainedge, 2-1, in the first game of the Class A baseball semifinals Monday.
J.J. Kissane scored on an errant throw on a rundown between third and home to give Division a 2-0 lead in the third. The Blue Dragons had loaded the bases with one out earlier in the inning before Lenny Martinez scored on a passed ball to open the scoring.
Winning pitcher Kyle Jordan allowed no earned runs and four hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Johnny Muller went 1-for-2. Division will host No. 1 Plainedge (22-1) in the second game of the series, Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Oyster Bay 15, East Rockaway 6: Rob Morgan was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Chris Kelly went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead No. 1 Oyster Bay (20-1) over No. 3 East Rockaway (13-11) in Game 1 of the Class B final. Joe Siringo allowed three earned runs in five innings, giving up eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be at Hofstra at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Chaminade 6, St. Anthony's 3: Tommy Roulis and Andrew Gallagher each went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lift No. 2 Chaminade (15-4) past No. 3 St. Anthony's (11-7) in Game 1 of the CHSAA semifinals. Eric Truss went 52/3 innings, allowing three runs and eight hits. He walked three and struck out seven to remain the only undefeated pitcher in the league at 7-0.
Gallagher pitched the final 11/3 inning, allowing one hit and striking out one to earn his fifth save of the year.
The Friars threatened with a runner on third with one out in the fourth, but Mike Ferranti made a diving catch in the left-centerfield gap to preserve the one-run lead for Chaminade. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played Tuesday at Farmingdale State at 6 p.m.
GIRLS BADMINTON
Half Hollow Hills 6, Whitman 3: Hannah Finger won her first singles match for top-seeded Half Hollow Hills (15-0) in the Suffolk Team Championship at Smithtown East High School.
The Thundercolts are back-to-back Suffolk champions, winning the fourth title in program history. No. 2 Whitman ended its season 12-3.
BOYS BADMINTON
Smithtown West 8, Whitman 1: Justin Lin came back from a one-game deficit to defeat Jesse Levy, 14-17, 15-13, 15-10, at first singles and help Smithtown West complete an undefeated season at 15-0 and become the Suffolk County boys champions. Jake McManus and Tom McArdle also won in come-from-behind fashion, defeating Whitman's Ryan Pagano and Ken Chin, 13-15, 15-8, 15-5, at fourth doubles. Whitman ended its season 10-5. Smithtown West also earned the league badminton title.
