Dodgers have 24 hits in win over Twins
After learning that their club had filed for bankrupcy protection earlier in the day, the Los Angeles Dodgers took it out on the Twins, mounting a season-high 24-hit attack in a 15-0 win in Minneapolis last night.
Matt Kemp had four hits, including his NL-leading 22nd home run. Tony Gwynn and Trent Oeltjen (homer, triple) also had four hits and Casey Blake added three, including a homer. Every Dodgers starter had at least one hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Chad Billingsley (7-6) combined with three relievers on a four-hitter in the Dodgers' seventh shutout of the season.
Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly said he hadn't talked to a single teammate about the bankruptcy filing. "I'm not too sure what that means," he said. "As far as I know, I'm pitching tomorrow."
Reds 5, Rays 0: Jonny Gomes hit a towering homer and Mike Leake pitched six innings for visiting Cincinnati.
Former Rays outfielder Gomes, playing at Tropicana Field for the first time since becoming a free agent after the 2008 season, hit a solo shot off an overhanging catwalk to make it 4-0 in the fourth.
Gomes has hit nine fair balls off the catwalks, the most at the St. Petersburg ballpark since it opened in 1998. "It was a good opportunity to show the Reds the guidelines on the catwalk," Gomes said with a smile. "I haven't been here for a while, so I saw some familiar faces. A good opportunity to come back to the Trop."
Brandon Phillips had four hits and two RBIs for Cincinnati.
The Rays had won eight of their previous nine, but they fell 21/2 games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East.
Tigers 4, Blue Jays 2: Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning and Victor Martinez drove in two runs for host Detroit. Max Scherzer struck out nine in seven innings as the AL Central leaders won their third straight.
In the makeup of a May 17 rainout, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected in the seventh after a long argument that included a mocking impersonation of first-base umpire Ed Rapuano changing his call on a close play.
"Don't ask me about the play, whatever you do," Leyland said at the start of his postgame remarks after initially saying he wouldn't speak to reporters. "That was a good win in a tough game. We're playing a lot of games in a short stretch, and I'm proud of these guys."
Indians 5, Diamondbacks 4: Orlando Cabrera homered off J.J. Putz with two outs in the top of the ninth for Cleveland.
Cubs 7, Rockies 3: Carlos Peña and Aramis Ramirez each homered twice for host Chicago. Carlos Gonzalez homered twice for the Rockies.
