Dolan breaking records

Christian Dolan had an impressive 24th place finish in last year’s state tournament, but if yesterday was any indication, his name could be moving up on the scoreboard this year.

Dolan, a senior at Islip looking to win his second straight Suffolk County title, all but ensured a return trip to states after shooting a Suffolk qualifier record 7-under 65 at the par 72 Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead in the division championships.  Dolan shot a 35 on the front nine and 30 on the back to break the previous record of 66, according to Islip coach Mike Reilly.

The top six teams and top 30 individuals return today for the conclusion of the team and individual state qualifiers.  The individuals with the top nine two-day scores will advance to the state tournament at Cornell beginning on June 5.

On the par 5, 433-yard tenth hole, Dolan used a 4-iron off the tee box and reached the green in two.  He then drained a 15-foot putt for eagle to bring him to 3-under.  He would go on to birdie four straight holes, beginning at the 13th.

“He drove the ball exceptionally well,” Reilly said.  “He outdrove everyone in his group by a good 20 yards.  On the back nine his putting really started to come together.  It was one of those days where everything was working.”

"Last year he did what he had to do to win," Reilly added.  "He won by four or five strokes.  He shot a 68 the first day and even par 72 the next day.  This year he said, 'I not only want to win, I want to shoot a great score.' So I think hes looking to make a statement and truly show what a great golfer he is."
