The Dolan family, which has sponsored an annual July Fourth fireworks display at its waterfront Cove Neck property for many years, has decided not to do a show this year.
A family spokesman Wednesday provided the following statement to Newsday: “For a number of reasons, the Dolan family will not be hosting a July 4 party this year. The family is aware that many people make plans around the fireworks and wanted to get the word out early. The reasons are private as is the party.”
Last year, as hundreds of boats that gather to watch the display were leaving, a 34-foot cabin cruiser capsized on its way back to Huntington and three children trapped in the cabin drowned.
The Dolan family, which owns several homes on the shore of Oyster Bay Harbor, conveyed the decision in an invitation-style announcement it mailed last week to neighbors usually invited to the annual party, according to the family spokesman and several people who received the invitation.
Charles Dolan, who hosts the party with his wife, Helen, is chairman of Cablevision Systems Corp., which owns Newsday.
