Another loss for the 0-4 Dolphins: Quarterback Chad Henne is out for the season.

Henne decided to have shoulder surgery and was placed on injured reserve yesterday. The Dolphins signed quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who was released Tuesday by the Giants after recovering from a blood disorder that sent him to the hospital in August.

Henne separated his left shoulder when tackled early in Sunday's loss at San Diego. It might have been his last game with Miami, because his contract expires after the season. He lost his past seven starts for the Dolphins, who have a bye this week.

Matt Moore will start Oct. 17 against the Jets. Moore is a fourth-year pro with 23 starts, all with the Panthers. He went 1-4 last year as a starter before a right shoulder injury ended his season.

Peyton back on Colts' sideline

Peyton Manning will return to the sideline Sunday. He still can't save the 0-4 Colts' sinking season.

The four-time MVP said he is progressing well from his latest neck surgery, that his rehab regimen is increasing and that he is hopeful of returning to the practice field before this season ends.

"I think you have to have hope until the doctors rule you out," he said. "We're having a lot of injuries, so if [the Colts] come to me and say they have to make a move, I won't fight them on that.''

Bill Polian, the Colts' vice chairman, and general manager Chris Polian want to keep Manning on the active roster as long as possible so he can at least return to practice. He has missed all four games since the Sept. 8 procedure, his third neck surgery in 19 months.

The Colts need a win Sunday against the Chiefs (1-3) to avoid their first 0-5 start since 1997, the year before Manning arrived.

Around the league

Receiver Danny Amendola (dislocated elbow) and cornerback Bradley Fletcher (knee ligament) will miss the rest of the season for the 0-4 Rams . . . Panthers tight end Jeremy Shockey, who suffered a mild concussion Sunday, said he expects to play against the Saints, who cut him after last season.
