Dozens charged with drunken, drugged driving
Nassau and Suffolk police have arrested at least 71 people during the Memorial Day weekend on charges of drunken or drugged driving.
According to spokeswomen for each of the county police agencies:
Twenty-five people were arrested on DWI charges in Nassau County between 7 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.
And 14 people were arrested there on the same charges during roughly the same period Friday into Saturday.
In Suffolk, 32 people were arrested on DWI and driving-while-ability-impaired charges between 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Sunday.
Both county police departments said they deployed extra patrol officers as they stepped up efforts to catch offenders.
The number does not include DWI arrests by State Police, village or city police departments, or the sheriff's department.
The increased patrols will be in force all weekend.
