Drew Doughty scores twice as Canada edges Finland
Drew Doughty earned a spot on Canada's Olympic team because of his ability to move the puck, skate and hit hard.
The Los Angeles defenseman also is giving Canada a surprising offensive boost at the Sochi Games.
Doughty broke a scoreless tie midway through the first period and scored the winning goal with 2:28 left in overtime, giving the Canadians a 2-1 win over Finland yesterday.
"I don't know what's going on," said Doughty, who has four goals in three Olympic games after scoring only eight times in 59 NHL games this season. "I don't score like this in L.A. at all. A lot of it is just my teammates. They're doing a great job getting me the puck."
Canada closed the preliminary round of the tournament with a win that would've been more helpful had it occurred in regulation, when a victory would have made it the top-seeded team in the quarterfinals. Instead, it will be ranked No. 3 among the final eight teams.
For Canada to repeat as the gold medalist, it might have to beat standout goalie Jonas Hiller and the Swiss in the quarterfinals and the surging Americans in the semifinals just to play for the title Sunday.
Russia 1, Slovakia 0: Alexander Radulov and Ilya Kovalchuk scored in a shootout and Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 shots for Russia a day after losing a shootout to Team USA.
After Varlamov stopped both Slovak attempts in the shootout, Kovalchuk beat Jan Laco to seal the Russians' second win in the preliminary round.
Laco, who made 36 saves, was a surprise starter in place of his winless team's two NHL goalies, and the Kontinental Hockey League backup nearly stole a win over the powerful Russian offense.
Austria 3, Norway 1: Michael Grabner scored two goals and Mathias Lange made 34 saves as Austria earned its first win. Islanders forward Grabner has five goals in his first three Olympic games after scoring early and late against Norway. His breakaway goal with 1:37 left secured the victory. -- AP
