DWI patrols for St. Patrick’s Day in Nassau

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale announced Tuesday that the department will allocate additional police officers to conduct an extensive driving while intoxicated enforcement initiative this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

“We will be targeting drunk drivers and looking to prevent the kind of senseless alcohol-related accidents that, unfortunately, often occur during a holiday weekend. There will be additional police patrols all around Nassau County and chances are if you drive drunk you will be arrested,” Mangano said.

The program, “STOP DWI,” is funded by DWI fines collected in Nassau County and will provide the Nassau department and police departments throughout the county with additional funding for implementation of a DWI saturation enforcement strategy that has proved successful in years past.

Mangano and Dale advised:
* If you plan to drink, choose a designated driver before going out.
* Take mass transit, a cab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
* Spend the night where the activity is being held.
* Always buckle up — it’s the best defense against a drunken driver.
