The 11 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center has downgraded Earl to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour.

The tropical storm warning in effect for Suffolk county has been discontinued.

The hurricane is now at 40 degrees north, 69.7 degrees west, approximately 90 miles south southeast of Nantucket and 135 southeast of Montauk.
