The East Hampton Town Board has voted 5-0 to spend $385,000 in community preservation funds to acquire a 1.1-acre parcel of undeveloped land at 8 Deer Path in Springs.

The property, owned by Barry McCallion and JoAnne Canary, will be used for open space. Because the money comes from a special tax which applies only to real estate transfers, it will not increase the town’s general tax rate.

The board, at its meeting Thursday night, also voted to include a 4.9-acre lot at 889 Fireplace Rd. in Springs on its list of properties which are being considered for open space preservation purposes because they would add to “the preservation of community character.”

Open space purchases can only take place if the owner of a parcel is willing to sell  to the town. Property is not subject to condemnation.
