The scheduled demolition of the decrepit Plaza Theatre in East Patchogue was delayed by Tropical Storm Irene’s untimely arrival.
It is now scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 13, according to Brookhaven Town. The demolition will come after a ceremony, and refreshments will be served.
The Plaza Theatre, at East Main Street and Grove Avenue, has been dormant for 25 years, becoming a local eyesore. The town plans to spend $725,000 to demolish it and sell the property for development, town officials have said.
Efforts by Suffolk County to take over the property started in 2006.
Brookhaven took over the project two years ago, and the county lent Brookhaven $350,000 this year toward the Plaza’s demolition.
The town condemned the theater after the owner rejected the town’s $1.19-million purchase offer, town officials have said.
