THE BUDGET

The district is proposing a budget of $21,389,881, an increase of 2.09 percent over last year's $20,951,985. The local tax levy would be $18,118,900, a decrease of 0.07 percent from the current figure of $18,132,320.

The proposed budget includes a property tax rate increase of 3.55 percent, from $8.45 per $1,000 of assessed value to $8.75 per $1,000, district officials said. A taxpayer whose home is assessed at $500,000 will pay about $4,375 in school taxes, an increase of about $150 from the previous year.

The budget would maintain existing programs, services and jobs.

There are two other propositions on the ballot. One would extend the contract with the Westhampton Beach school district to pay tuition to send students in grades 7-12 through the 2014-15 school year. The second would authorize an expenditure of $524,593 so residents can be included in the Suffolk County Cooperative Library System.
