EAT CHOCOLATE, LOSE WEIGHT: New Science Proves You Should Eat Chocolate Every Day, by Will Clower, PhD. Rodale, 274 pp., $25.99.

Just in time for Valentine's Day: A chocolate lovers' diet.

Will Clower, PhD, neurophysiologist, neuroscientist and nutritionist, doesn't want you gorging on Snickers. There's good and bad chocolate, he writes, listing three "simple rules": 1) Darker is better, 2) Darker is better, 3) Darker is better.

Sugar -- the enemy -- goes up when the percentage of cocoa goes down, he writes.

But dark chocolate cuts cravings: Its vegetable oils create satiety hormones that slow the rate your stomach empties, and "the taste receptors for bitter flavors may help trigger a long-term reduction of hunger."

THE SCOOP You'll eat 1 ounce a day, less than half a candy bar. ("Sensual Eating" will teach you to enjoy "thumb-size" pieces.) If chocolate melts slowly on your tongue, your brain may think you're full.

THE BOTTOM LINE There's a meal plan, recipes -- cocoa chili! -- and scientific study notes.
