Eatons Neck residents voted down a $500,000 bond requested by the fire district for a renovation.

Fire Commissioner Brian Gorman said the vote was 219-105 against the bond. Gorman said Thursday he did not know whether district officials would put the bond up for another vote.

He said some residents, including himself, received letters in their mailboxes urging people to vote down the bond. He said the letters included false information. District officials will meet soon to decide what to do next, he said, adding they want to rebut the information publicly but have not decided how to do that.

The renovation project would cost $800,000 to $850,000. Gorman said fire district officials have put aside about $200,000 in reserves and the district has been approved for a $150,000 low-interest state loan.

Fire officials say the renovation is needed because the station is cramped and hasn’t been updated in decades.
