57,000 -- That's the number of pages in General Electric's tax return this year -- or would have been, had the company not filed electronically. It's a good thing it did; printed and stacked, the filing would stand 19 feet tall. Contrary to what's been reported, GE did pay some federal income tax in 2010, but won't say how much -- or what it paid its lawyers and accountants. The complexity of its return illustrates the failings of the corporate income tax, which brings in little -- and makes less sense. A truly sensible tax overhaul would abolish it.
