Democrats and Republicans were working together to straighten out the voting machine problems in Westchester County and agree on how to get the ballots counted — if they can get a judge to sign off, according to a source with knowledge of the developing situation.

Problems began early in the day when officials discovered a printing problem made ballots incompatible with scanners at numerous sites.

A team of more than a dozen Westchester County Board of Elections officials have been going to sites to try to get the machines back online and county officials said tens of thousands of ballots were being secured in specially marked ballots to be counted as emergency ballots after 9 p.m., LoHud.com reported.

Democrats and Republicans have agreed to bring the ballots to the county board headquarters to be counted, the source said.

But here is the quirk. They need a judge to effectively waive a state requirement that ballots must be counted on site, the source said.

The parties were trying to finalize language on the request and were hoping the bipartisan effort would do the trick.
