Elvis co-stars we loved -- on TV
Elvis Presley left the building for good 37 years ago this week, bequeathing us his rich pop-culture legacy, which besides his music and TV appearances included more than 30 movies. Most were instantly forgettable, but we couldn't help but notice that five of our favorite TV actresses co-starred with Elvis on the big screen.
Donna Douglas Taking a break from playing Elly May Clampett on "The Beverly Hillbillies," she co-starred as Frankie, a performer on a Mississippi River paddleboat in "Frankie and Johnny" (1966).
Barbara Eden In the western drama "Flaming Star" (1960), the future "I Dream of Jeannie" headliner played the love interest of Presley's character, the conflicted son of an American Indian mother and a Texas rancher father.
Shelley Fabares Best known on TV as the daughter on "The Donna Reed Show" and the title character's wife on "Coach," Fabares co-starred in three Presley movies: "Girl Happy" (1965), "Spinout" (1966) and "Clambake" (1967).
Carolyn Jones Six years away from her role of Morticia on "The Addams Family," Jones co-starred in "King Creole" (1958), adapted from Harold Robbins' "A Stone for Danny Fisher" and widely considered one of Presley's best movies.
Mary Tyler Moore Between Laura Petrie and Mary Richards, Moore co-starred in "Change of Habit" (1969). She plays a nun (dressing in regular clothing) who works in an inner-city clinic whose doctor (Presley) falls for her, unaware of her background.
