Emergency preparedness bags for the elderly to be distributed

Volunteers with the Manhattan-based Jewish Association Serving the Aging planned to assemble 400 emergency bags for elderly residents at a Long Beach senior center Monday.

The bags will include items such as batteries, first aid kits and flashlights, a JASA spokeswoman said.

The bags are to be delivered to local seniors who receive home-delivered meals, JASA officials said in a statement.

The effort is part of JASA’s Emergency Preparedness Project, which seeks to “bring together Long Island residents of all ages to provide senior center members and homebound elderly with safety kits, practical information and resources in the event of an emergency,” the group said in a statement. The preparedness effort is happening to coincide with the anniversary of superstorm Sandy, the statement said.

The assembly was scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at Long Beach Senior Center, located at 570 W. Walnut St. in Long Beach.
