Ex-Islandia resident killed in Afghanistan honored
The Islandia Village board of trustees observed a moment of silence at its Tuesday night meeting for a NATO contractor and former village resident who was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday.
Kevin O’Rourke, 52, died in a firefight during a patrol in the eastern province of Wardak, officials said. The circumstances of his death are under investigation.
Mayor Allan M. Dorman requested a moment of silence for O’Rourke, who he called “a pretty outstanding person.” Dorman said O’Rourke, a retired New York City police sergeant and father of two, lived in the village from 1993 until he retired from the NYPD in 2003.
He then moved to central Florida, where he had a home renovation and landscaping business. Two years ago, he began doing contracting work overseas.
