FAA: Pilot reports unmanned aircraft on approach to JFK

A pilot for Alitalia reported seeing an unmanned aircraft while making a landing at Kennedy Airport Monday and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

The flight was on final approach to runway 31R about 1:15 p.m. when the pilot saw a small, remote-controlled aircraft about 4 or 5 miles southeast of the airport, the FAA said.

The pilot told the FAA that he saw the unmanned aircraft at an altitude of about 1,500 feet. The pilot didn't take evasive action and the flight landed safely, the FAA said.

An agency spokesman said the incident is being investigated for any violation of altitude rules that govern flight of unmanned aircraft.
