The top five shortstops will be selected early in drafts and then it might be quiet for several rounds at the position. There's no need to reach on the elite. Shortstop is a good position to get excellent values to fulfill your need for stolen bases. There's a lot of speed here.

Jason Bartlett (Rays): The most surprising stat for Bartlett last season was the 14 home runs. He had just 11 in his first 1,533 at-bats. His Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) was .368 leading to a career-high .320 average.

His career BABIP is .330, so expect a regression in average and power. Bartlett will provide stolen bases, but there are several shortstops going later in drafts that will produce similar numbers. He will be overvalued.

Elvis Andrus (Rangers): Andrus had a good rookie season with a .267 average and stole 33 bases in 39 attempts and that was with six in the first two months as the Rangers gave him the red light.

He had a good contact rate and a BABIP of .307 was low for someone with his speed. If he can improve his on-base percentage, expect more than 40 steals with potential for 50.

Asdrubal Cabrera (Indians): He's expected to hit leadoff and is coming off a very good season. A .360 BABIP indicates a possible regression of his .308 average, but he should be a good source of runs and stolen bases. He hit 42 doubles and drove in 68 runs. He also has second base eligibility and shouldn't cost much.

Erick Aybar (Angels): Aybar will hit leadoff and while many will look at last season's 14 stolen bases in 504 at-bats and think mediocre, his minor league history shows there is more upside. Aybar improved his contact and walk rates. He could eclipse 30 stolen bases.

Everth Cabrera (Padres): Cabrera skipped Double-A and had just 27 at-bats at Triple-A. That makes his 2009 season all the more impressive.

He went 25 of 33 (75 percent) on stolen base attempts in just 377 at-bats. As someone with a lot of speed, he hits the ball on the ground frequently, which is what you want to see with his skill set. Another undervalued source of speed.

Alcides Escobar (Brewers): He hit .304 in 125 at-bats last season. He hasn't shown any power yet. He's a good contact hitter and has lots of speed. He improved his walk rate at Triple-A, but had just a three percent walk rate with the Brewers, although it was a small sample.

Draft him for stolen bases and hope he bolsters his on-base percentage.

Rafael Furcal (Dodgers): He is being drafted based on past achievements. Furcal just doesn't attempt as many steals. He tried 18 in 613 at-bats last year and hit just nine home runs. Stay away.
