Farmingville Army Ranger to be honored

Army Sgt. Jason Santora, a Farmingville native who was killed in Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Army, will be memorialized with a plaque at Brookhaven Town Hall War Memorial Tuesday afternoon in his hometown.

Santora, a 2003 graduate of Sachem North High School, enlisted in 2006 and had deployed several times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga.

In April 2010, Santora was two months into a tour of duty as a team leader in Logar Province when he was “seriously wounded in an engagement with an enemy force,” the U.S. Army Special Operations Command said at the time. He died on April 23, 2010 at age 25.

Brookhaven Town officials and local veterans’ organizations will unveil the plaque at 4:30 p.m. The memorial is outside Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville.
