A fatal auto accident forced the closure of eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway early Monday, Nassau County police said.

The accident happened about 4:40 a.m. at Exit 44 near the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, and all eastbound lanes were still closed at dawn. Images from news helicopters showed a badly mangled car in the middle of the road, and eastbound traffic being diverted to the service road.

A police spokeswoman said the cause of the accident was under investigation and no further details were immediately available.
