Feature film to detail superstorm Sandy recovery in Long Beach

The New York-based independent production company Blacktop Pictures is to begin shooting the feature film “Waterline” in Long Beach next month.

The film will tell the story of how members of a coastal town rebuild their community following the devastation of superstorm Sandy.

“There are going to be a lot of documentary films coming out about Sandy and that’s great, but a narrative film has the capability of tapping into a different audience,” said Mitchell Kase, a Plainview native and the director of “Waterline.”

“We really wanted to play an active role in helping this community,” he added.

The sentiment throughout the process has been to give back and work with the Long Beach community.

Along with Kyle Patrick Brennan and Andrew Ruth, the film’s stars and the founders of Blacktop Pictures, Kase began an Indiegogo page to raise a budget of about $300,000.

After the film’s release, the first $300,000 in profits will go to six charities aimed at Sandy relief. Fifty percent of any remaining profits will go to charity as well, Brennan said.

The three also held a casting call last month for Long Beachers to use as extras and in other small roles.

Production is expected to take 22 days with a 2014 release date.

“Of course, the devastation is part of the story, but we want to focus on the positive things that came out of it,” Kase said. “The film is about the personal stories, the intimate details. It’s about people coming together and supporting each other.”
