FIRESIDE FRIDAY: East Northport Middle School Musical Revue
Feb. 4, 7:30 p.m., East Northport Public Library
Join the talented students of the East Northport Middle School for an evening of string, woodwind, brass, and vocal music. The String Chamber Ensemble will be featured as well as songs from the students’ recent production of Damn Yankees.

A resume is a powerful tool in your job search. Experienced career counselor Margaret King will explore what format may work best for you, how to highlight experiences, overcome experience gaps, as well as other do’s and don’ts that will help you craft a winning resume. Long Island Rail Road stations
Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m., Northport Public Library
Take a look at the fascinating history of Long Island’s train stations with David D. Morrison, author of the photographic history Long Island Rail Road Stations. From the Forest Hills Station, where Theodore Roosevelt delivered his famous unification speech on July 4, 1917 to the Amagansett station building where Nazi spies boarded a train bound for New York City in 1942, Morrison explores the history of the 125 stations that serve the Long Island Rail Road. Walt Whitman, Woody Guthrie, and Beyond: Fanfares for the Common Man
Feb. 15, 7:30 p.m., Northport Public Library
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association presents an evening of readings and discussion with poet George Wallace, writer-in-residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in West Hills. Wallace will explore how liberty, fraternity, and equality—the values expressed by writers like Whitman, Emerson, Thoreau, and Twain—have carried through to the works of more contemporary writers like John Steinbeck, Langston Hughes, Frank O’Hara, and Maya Angelou. In 2003, Wallace was named Suffolk County’s first poet laureate. He is the author of 19 chapbooks of poetry and currently teaches English and literature at Pace University. No registration required.

Temper Tantrums—Yours and Theirs
Feb. 17, 7 p.m., East Northport Public Library
You are at the grocery store when your toddler has his fourth temper tantrum of the day. Although temper tantrums are normal for children between the ages of 1 and 5, you can’t help but feel embarrassed. Maybe you even feel like having a tantrum of your own. What should you do? In this program led by parent educator Kerri Kreh Reda, you will discuss the causes of tantrums, what can be done to minimize them, and the best ways to deal with them when they occur. (90 min.) Michael Libresco-D’Innocenzo, professor of history at Hofstra University, will explore significant national and international developments. All attending the program are welcome to share their views. No registration required.

Jazz: Our Music, Our Culture
Feb. 25, 7:30 p.m., Northport Public Library
Take a multimedia journey through the history of jazz music from the 1900s to today with award-winning jazz saxophonist and recording artist Shenole Latimer. While performing some classic jazz pieces, Latimer will talk about the struggles and contributions of musicians like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. He will explore the African-American roots of jazz and how jazz reflects the cultural phases of the African-American experience. Registration begins February 4 at either library building or online.

Novel Ideas

American Sign Language
Feb. 28 / March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4, 11, 25; all 3 -5 p.m., Northport Public Library
American Sign Language is the visual-gestural language of the deaf. In this eight-part course with instructor Cindy Knakal you will learn sign vocabulary and be introduced to basic grammar principles, nonverbal communication techniques, and conversational skills.
