The application deadline for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Public Assistance program for state, local and tribal governments, and some nonprofits, has been extended 30 days -- until Dec. 29.

FEMA is taking "unprecedented steps . . . to help New Yorkers tackle the unprecedented challenges posed by superstorm Sandy," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola).

"We stand ready to help and are determined to make sure we bounce back from Sandy as quickly as possible," she said in a statement.

The program provides federal disaster grants for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement or restoration of storm-damaged, publicly owned facilities and some private nonprofits.

The deadline for individual FEMA housing assistance is Dec. 31, although agency officials say deadlines for both public and individual aid programs can be extended further if the state makes such a request.
