A Mineola man hoping to set a field-goal kicking world record will be the opening act for the Town of Oyster Bay’s new Theodore Roosevelt Park Football Field.
Craig Pinto, 33, set his first record last year, kicking 717 field goals in 12 hours on Bethpage High School’s football field.
He has been training for the past several months to attempt more than 1,000 field goals in 24 hours. He planned to do it on the same field on Oct. 9, but a scheduling conflict with games set for the Bethpage Police Athletic Association’s Football League put the event in question.
Pinto said the town offered him a variety of alternative dates and locations, but he had corralled many volunteers who may not be available on other days.
That’s when Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto stepped in and offered the new field in Oyster Bay, which has only some finishing touches left, said Kurt Ludwig, a spokesman for the Town of Oyster Bay. The town has not set a date for a grand opening.
“I have to thank Supervisor Venditto for working with us to make this happen after short notice,” Pinto said. “We're still right on schedule for this event, and it was a seamless move, which makes it easier for us to remain focused on the goal."
Pinto’s attempt will start at 7 a.m. on Oct. 9.
