Field Hockey: LI's Top 10 (as of Sept. 24)

1. Sachem East (4-0)
The defending Class A state champs continued to roll, winning both of their games last week. The Flaming Arrows topped rival Smithtown East, 2-0, on Wednesday, avenging their only loss in 2011. Kayla McKeveny scored three goals in Saturday's 7-1 win over Huntington.

2. Garden City (4-0)
The Trojans beat defending Nassau Class A champion Massapequa, 2-0, on Thursday. Through four games, Garden City has yet to surrender a goal. The Trojans outscored opponents 74-9 last season en route to the Class B state final.
Next game: Sept. 28 vs. Floral Park

3. Ward Melville (3-0)
The Patriots have looked impressive so far and are coming off a thrilling 2-1 win over Division I rival Northport on Friday. Ward Melville, a Suffolk Class A finalist last season, should soon be strengthened with the return of starting goalie Andre Bongiorno.

4. Sayville (4-1)
The defending Suffolk Class B champs bounced back from a 2-1 loss to East Islip on Sept. 13 with three straight wins. They edged West Islip, 2-1, on Saturday.

5. Manhasset (2-1)
The Indians opened the season with a 2-0 loss to rival Garden City, but they quickly rebound with a 3-1 win over Cold Spring Harbor (the team that eliminated them in last year's semifinals) and then beat Nassau "A" champ Massapequa, 2-0, on Saturday.
Next game: Sept. 24 vs. Southampton

6. Miller Place (5-0)
The Panthers have been on a roll and are coming off last week's 5-2 win over Southampton. Miller Place has shown already that it will be a force with wins over East Islip and longtime rival Shoreham-Wading River.

7. East Islip (5-1)
Courtney Bernardini scored the winner in overtime as the Redmen beat Bay Shore, one of the top teams in Suffolk, on Saturday. East Islip already has two impressive statement victories, having beaten the Marauders and Sayville.
Next game: Sept. 27 at Sachem East

8. Bay Shore (4-1)
The Marauders are coming off a loss to East Islip, still, they are one of the more talented teams in the county and have proven as much this season with a 2-1 win over Smithtown East two weeks ago.
Next game: Sept. 25 vs. Ward Melville

9. Rocky Point (5-0)
Maggie DeFrank scored two goals in their 3-2 win over Shoreham-Wading River. The Eagles have looked impressive, certainly considering those two goals from the Wildcats were their first allowed this season. Rocky Point, a Suffolk Class B finalist last season, is again a contender.

10. Smithtown East (2-2)
The Bulls are off to a slow start, having lost some tough games, but we'll trust their track record. Smithtown East has been one of the top teams of the last decade, and a couple losses – to quality opponents – isn't enough to overlook them. They beat Commack, 1-0, Friday.
