Little did TRITEC Real Estate know when it began building the Stony Brook Technology Center in 1987 that it would still be working on the buildings 25 years later.

Finally, the center on 102 acres in East Setauket has been completed. It's uncertain whether that is any kind of record in the annals of Long Island building projects. But the completion is a relief to TRITEC principals.

The buildings had actually been completed a few years ago. What put the final seal on it all came late last year, when TRITEC received the final certificate of occupancy for a 40,000-square-foot medical office condo at 4 Technology Dr.

TRITEC spokesman Alan Wax said the slumping real estate market had held up deals for the final 40,000 square feet of space.

In a statement, principal Bob Coughlin said when TRITEC began the project it was "a risky undertaking" because most businesses in the late 1980s were located closer to the Long Island Expressway.

The technology center is in a parklike setting with a natural barrier buffering it from Route 347.

TRITEC says that about 5,000 people work for almost 100 companies in 26 buildings at the park.
