Fire Island Association's board changes

The Fire Island Association recently elected several new officers to its board of directors.

“We want to protect all the environmental assets of Fire Island,” said Gerard Stoddard, the association’s outgoing president, who had served since 1987. “Now, the emphasis will be to make Fire Island a functioning national park as well as a functioning community.”

The Fire Island Association, founded in 1955, seeks to protect the island’s shoreline and natural environment by advocating for and representing the concerns of property owners, officials said.

Stoddard, of Ocean Bay Park, will continue as an emeritus member of the board. Suzanne Goldhirsch will replace Stoddard as president. She also serves as president of Fire Island’s Seaview Association.

Bob Spencer, of Davis Park, was elected executive vice president; Alex Brash, of Point O’Woods, was elected treasurer; and Marsha Hunter, of Kismet, was elected secretary.

The association also elected three vice presidents: Hugh O’Brien of Saltaire, Tom Schwarz of Lonelyville, and John Lund of Davis Park.
