The high waves pushed ashore by superstorm Sandy leveled the dunes on areas of Fire Island, exposing the remains of a shipwreck east of Davis Park.

Experts at the Long Island Maritime Museum believe the wooden ship is a post-Civil War cargo vessel built before 1880, and they are conducting research to determine which one.

The National Park Service believes it is the remains of the Bessie A. White, a four-masted coal schooner built in 1919, wrecked on Feb. 6, 1922, and periodically uncovered by storms.
