Fire Island summer hot spots

Fire Island is famous for its hot spots -- from the come-as-you-are bar-restaurants in Ocean Beach to the gay-friendly hangouts of Cherry Grove. Come weekends, legions of daytrippers ferry over to the barrier island to join the summer share crowd for a long afternoon or night of barhopping.
In the wake of superstorm Sandy, it may have seemed as though Fire Island had been irreparably damaged. While there's still plenty to fix, many of the top spots are open.
No ferry necessary -- park at Field 5 at Robert Moses and walk (a mile) over. There's an open mic most Fridays and live bands most Saturdays.
Located on such a slender section of land that the bay and the ocean are visible, the Casino Bar can get wild on weekends with live bands and big crowds.

The iconic super-club just reopened a week ago after the original was destroyed in a 2011 fire. The two-level structure towers mere footsteps from the ferry, and there's sure to be a big LGBT scene on its open terraces with views of the water.
