The Nassau County Firefighters Museum teamed up with North Carolina-based fire safety product manufacturer Kidde to donate 5,000 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to 15 Nassau County volunteer fire departments in areas affected by superstorm Sandy.

“Unfortunately, during these extreme times with dangerous conditions, we are seeing an increase in carbon monoxide incidents and also fires,” museum president Angelo Catalano said in a statement. “The Firefighters Museum, along with Kidde, thought that donating these smoke and carbon monoxide detectors will protect residents who need them now and also in the future when they rebuild.”

Yesterday, each department received more than 300 detectors to be distributed to residents. The departments were Baldwin, Bayville, Bellmore, East Rockaway, Freeport, Inwood, Island Park, Long Beach, Lido-Pt. Lookout, Massapequa, Meadowmere Park, Merrick, Oceanside, Seaford and Wantagh.
