First round-the-globe black pilot to speak
A renowned pilot and pioneer will speak at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City next Wednesday, bringing tales of his record-breaking flight and emphasizing the importance of aviation education to Long Island high school students.
The museum will host a Q&A with aviator Barrington Irving, 28, before incoming freshmen to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Magnet Academy in Uniondale, according to a news release.
Born in the country of Jamaica and raised in Miami, Irving in 2007 became the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world.
His 96-day, 26,800-mile trip also made him the first black pilot to circumnavigate the globe.
“He has accomplished so much at such a young age,” said Tracey Ramirez, a museum spokeswoman. “He can be both inspiration and motivation to the kids.”
Irving’s appearance will be a school-year preview for incoming freshmen, who will travel to the museum daily for hands-on math and science courses.
The five-year-old program includes about 200 high school students from the Uniondale, Westbury and Freeport public school districts. It’s also partnered with 18 Long Island-based aerospace and technology firms for on-site visits and internships.
Irving will begin fielding questions at 10 a.m., museum officials said. The event is also open to museum visitors.
