Five New Yorkers diagnosed with West Nile virus
The health department revealed Monday that five New Yorkers have contracted the West Nile virus.
The patients, all of whom are over 50, are the first cases this year. Three of the unidentified people were hospitalized with meningitis and discharged. The remaining two didn't require hospitalization.
Two of the patients were from Brooklyn, while the remaining three were residents of Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett said New Yorkers can take precaution against the disease by eliminating standing water from their homes and using mosquito repellent when outside.
The city will spray for mosquitoes Wednesday in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
