Floral Park High performs at Carnegie Hall
Floral Park Memorial High School’s senior high chorus and the school’s Long Island Sounds vocal ensemble followed renowned Polish-American pianist Arthur Rubinstein’s advice -- “How do I get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.” -- all the way to the famed facility last week.
The singing groups, directed by Floral Park music teacher Steven Altinel, performed at Carnegie Hall’s main stage on Feb. 1.
Alumni, parents and teachers attended the event, which included, among other performances, a senior chorus version of “Lord of the Dance,” with a solo by Christian Alvarez. Long Island Sounds sang “There Will Be Rest,” whose lyrics are a poem by Sara Teasdale and set to music by Frank Ticheli.
Altinel has been a teacher at FPM for the past five years. In May of 2009 he brought the senior chorus and Long Island Sounds to the stage of Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center to perform.
"Of my six years at FPM, this was my proudest moment,” said senior Jihan Killikelly. “I didn't think that after Lincoln Center it could get any better."
