Foehl leads Whitman girls in Class AA first round
Megan Foehl scored five points in the final 1:27, including a floater in the lane to give No. 6 Whitman a three-point lead en route to a 55-51 victory over Copiague last night in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA girls basketball tournament. Foehl scored 23 points and Ally Leftridge added 10 to lead Whitman (14-4). Chelsea Williams had 18 points for No. 11 Copiague. Whitman will visit Ward Melville at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Ward Melville 55, West Islip 20: Kaitlyn Carballeira had 23 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks to lead No. 3 Ward Melville (16-3) in the first round of the Class AA Tournament. Georgia Holland added 10 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
Floyd 50, Lindenhurst 41: Monique Walker had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 7 Floyd (13-6) in the first round of the Class AA Tournament. Lushanata Savadel added 18 points and 15 rebounds. Colleen Ames scored 13 points for No. 10 Lindenhurst. Floyd plays No. 2 Sachem East at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Smithtown West 70, East Islip 50: Sara English had 26 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks and Shneeka Center had 25 points and 20 rebounds to lead No. 4 Smithtown West (15-3) in the first round of the Class AA Tournament. Paige Meehan had 22 points for No. 13 East Islip. Smithtown West will host Northport at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Northport 64, Smithtown East 39: Grace Schilling had 18 points, six assists and five steals to lead No. 5 Northport (16-2) in the first round of the Class AA Tournament. Stephanie Leon added 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks. Shannon O'Connor scored 11 points No. 12 Smithtown East.
