Free counseling will be offered Friday to Suffolk County homeowners in the midst of foreclosure or who are facing losing their home.

Foreclosure mortgage prevention specialists from the state Department of Financial Services will meet with homeowners from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Huntington Public Library.

The initiative is sponsored through a program launched in February by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

Specialists will meet with homeowners to assess where they are in the pre-foreclosure or foreclosure process, and will provide information about available loan modification programs. Homeowners will also get guidance on how to file complaints with the state so that cases of lender or mortgage servicer abuses, such as predatory lending practices, can be investigated.

Homeowners should bring documents such as records of mortgage payments or letters to them from lenders or mortgage servicers.

The library is at 145 Pidgeon Hill Rd. in Huntington Station .
