Former SJB star Huber transfers to Northeastern
Former St. John the Baptist star Christine Huber left Rutgers earlier this month and has transferred to Northeastern. Huber, a 6-4 freshman forward, has to sit out two semesters and will be eligible to play after the last final in the fall semester in late December 2010.
Huber enrolled at Northeastern on Jan. 19. She missed the first week of classes.
"It wasn't working out like I thought it would," Huber said. "There was a bunch of different issues. I thought it would be best if I moved on."
Huber said a myriad factors played a role, including playing time. Huber averaged 4.8 minutes per game. She started one game against Princeton and was pulled quickly. She hit two field goals and had 14 rebounds in 11 games.
"It was growing on me every day," Huber said. "I didn't want to waste time. I knew if I waited until the end of the season I would have to sit out a full year and that made me sick to my stomach."
Huber said the long days were also a problem. It took her a half-hour to get to class via the bus making her days longer. She didn't like the large campus and frequent early morning practices.
Huber took an unofficial visit to Rutgers while she was playing at an AAU Tournament at Rutgers in June 2008. Then she took another visit in July before committing a few days later.
Huber, who averaged 14.9 points, 15.1 rebounds, 3.7 blocked shots and 3.5 steals as a senior and was a three-time Newsday All-Long Island first-team selection, selected Northeastern over Delaware and Hartford.
"I really like the city [of Boston]," Huber said. "I got along well with the team and coaches."
Huber is reunited with former teammate at St. John the Baptist Dani Iervolino, who is a freshman at Northeastern. Huber said it didn't impact her decision, but it has helped her transition at Northeastern.
"Our families are so close," Huber said. "We're like sisters. We have spent eight years of our life together."
