A former New York state senator who was a longtime advocate of health care and criminal justice issues has died.

Catherine Abate was 66.

Her husband Ronald Kleigerman said Monday that Abate died Saturday. She had been diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago.

Abate served in the State Senate from 1994 to 1998, and represented parts of Manhattan. She also was the commissioner of the city departments of correction and probation in the administration of Mayor David Dinkins.

For more than the past decade, she was the president and CEO of the Community Healthcare Network.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) issued a statement calling Abate "a fearless champion of many important causes." Along with her husband, Abate is survived by her son.

Funeral services are planned for today and tomorrow. -- AP
