Flooded and wind-damaged properties in mid-Atlantic states and Northeast could stall the U.S. housing recovery, experts are saying. The homes in those regions account for one in five U.S. real estate sales. The damage will affect homes on the market and those in foreclosure. Nassau County Legis. Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) will host a community meeting Monday night for residents who experienced flooding issues during Sandy due to storm drain problems.

The meeting will address questions about rebuilding homes, elevating homes, Town of Hempstead building permit requirements, insurance and FEMA assistance.

It will be held at 7 p.m. in the Merrick Public Library, 2279 Merrick Ave.

Representatives from Hempstead Town’s building and engineering departments and FEMA’s Individual Assistance and Flood Mitigation, as well as attorneys and insurance adjusters, are expected to attend.

The speakers will discuss FEMA’s Increased Cost of Compliance program, insurance issues, disaster relief and other assistance available to residents.

For more information, contact Denenberg’s office at 516-571-6219.
