Fountain expense isn't worthwhile

It seems the height of vain stupidity to spend $50,000 of our Suffolk County tax money on a fountain from two centuries ago ["Source of civic pride: fountain flows again," News, May 31]. This is a staggering amount of money to spend on anything, but a fountain? Is Marie Antoinette on the county grant commission?
Have they never heard of resin in Babylon? A quick trip to any garden center reveals beautiful fountains made of the stuff at bargain prices. I'm sure they could have replicated this Victorian monstrosity at a fraction of the amount.
At a time when we are fighting to keep our homes and livelihoods, and when so many Long Islanders are losing everything, this just seems like a brainless waste. I hope they enjoy their fountain, because all I see is a waterfall of wasted cash.
