Four upcoming community events

Nassau County Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick), in conjunction with Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be sponsoring a no-cost breast cancer screening event Thursday.

The mammography van will be at the North Merrick Library, on 1691 Meadowbrook Rd., from 8:45 a.m. to noon.

The program is open to women 40 and older; any insurance will be accepted, without co-pay. Women covered by insurance must bring their information card and a prescription from their doctor to the screening. Women without health insurance will not pay any out-of-pocket costs.

Patients will be required to show ID at the time of the mammogram. If a patient has had a mammography through Nassau Health Care Corporation, they must bring prior films to their appointment.

The Long Beach Public Library, with the Nassau County Office for the Aging, is coordinating a support group targeted to respond to the needs of caregivers of older people, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano has announced.

The group provides an opportunity for participants to share experiences, help one another, receive peer support and discuss practical solutions to the many issues of caregiving.

The next meeting is Oct. 2 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Long Beach Public Library, 101 W. Park Ave.

Those interested in attending for the first time or in need of additional information should call 516-227-8900.

Another such program aimed at those in the Elmont, Floral Park, Franklin Square and West Hempstead area is to be held at the Elmont Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 8.

Hempstead Town residents are invited to enjoy a weekend at Lido Beach Town Park for the annual Family Festival by the Sea on Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day festival will be held at Lido Beach Town Park, 630 Lido Blvd. in Lido Beach, and runs from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on both days. Admission and parking are free.

The youth portion of the festival will include inflatables, puppet shows, circus clowns, pony rides, a petting zoo and science exhibits.

Festivalgoers can also enjoy the clam- and rib-eating contests Saturday at 1 p.m. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and each contestant is asked to make a $10 donation to the environmental group SPLASH.

There will also be a sand castle contest and a biathlon on Sunday.

The state will hold a workshop Wednesday in Old Bethpage for school and day care staff to learn how to comply with bans on pesticides and about alternatives to chemicals. Grassroots Environmental Education, a nonprofit, will teach the basics of grounds and pest management. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is sponsoring the workshops which are being held across the state and online.

“These workshops are just educational in explaining the other methods, other options than pesticides and if there is a last resort that requires guidance on the process,” DEC spokeswoman Lori Severino said. The other methods include maintaining soil health and planting certain plant species that are unattractive to insects, she said.
