Four upcoming community events

The firefighters will travel in fire vehicles in what they call “The Long Red Line” to Fort Bragg and Camp Lejuene in North Carolina on Wednesday.

Other caravans will be leaving Friday to the Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., to give Christmas presents to recuperating soldiers receiving hospitalization and rehabilitation treatment from injuries received in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The farmers market will be open rain or shine on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market will be held indoors in the Baldwin American Legion Post 246, on 2754 Grand Ave. in Baldwin.

Items available for purchase will include breads, jams, artisanal cheeses, organic chocolate, gluten-free granola, hot soup, pickles, baked goods, dog treats, soap, barbecue sauce, olive oil and fresh pasta.

The Candlelight Evenings offer a Hallmark card-like setting of flickering candles inside the Village’s historic homes, along with 19th-century holiday decorations, within the confines of a rural valley setting.

Forms of 19th-century entertainment offered will include a brass quartet and fiddlers playing popular seasonal tunes, as well as performances by local schools and organizations, a traditional 1866 decorated Christmas tree, stories of Christmases past, contra-dancing and a traditional bonfire.

“I invite residents to enjoy a candlelight evening among the village’s historic homes,” Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said in a statement Tuesday. He added that the site provides visitors with a unique and wonderful opportunity to step back in time.

Entrance fees are: $10 for adults, $7 for children (5-12), seniors and volunteer firefighters. Children under 5 are free.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock is holding a program with the Long Island Progressive Coalition’s PowerUp Communities program from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 at 48 Shelter Rock Rd. in Manhasset.

Homeowners can learn about saving on heating oil, reducing drafts, and how to get an energy audit and apply for rebates and other financial opportunities.

Marriele Robinson of the Long Island Progressive Coalition's PowerUp Communities project, and Jaime Pereira, director of business development at Powersmith, which provides energy-efficient services to homes, will speak.
