Four-year terms for Mineola village board pitched

The mayor of Mineola will seek a change in term lengths from two to four years for the positions of trustee and mayor.

Mayor Scott Strauss said Wednesday at a village board meeting that he has floated the plan at recent community forums and was greeted with support. The village will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18, officials said.

A simple majority of board members is required to change term lengths, village officials said, adding a public hearing is not required.

The current board consists of the mayor and four trustees, all of whom have two-year terms. The term for village justice is four years.

Joseph Scalero, Mineola’s village clerk, said no current terms may be altered and that each elected official would need to be elected to the new four-year term as the current one expires.
