Frank Reich's thoughts on QB Cade Klubnik so far
Frank Reich said he is pleased with the progress rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik has made throughout the Jets' offseason program and in training camp, but he also warned that things probably won’t always be smooth for him.
“There will be some storms,” Reich, the offensive coordinator, said on Friday. “You are a rookie quarterback, you are going to take your lumps.”
So far most of those “lumps” have occurred in the privacy of practices, including a Friday performance in which Klubnik threw a wobbly deep pass that was among three passes that should have been picked off, missed an open receiver, and had a screen pass batted down by a blitzer. Next week, though, those plays will start taking place in public as the Jets open their preseason on Aug. 14.
Klubnik will have a lot to live up to already among his fellow rookies after Carson Beck and Haynes King looked sharp in their preseason debuts in Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game.
“I think Cade’s been good,” Reich said. “I really like how he has come back mentally. I feel like he has taken a good step mentally. It’s a lot now. I think we’re at the point where everything is pretty much in. He shows the aptitude to pick it all up, the aptitude for big plays.
“Just continue to weather the storms.”
