Here are four upcoming community events and specials around Long Island.

RIVERHEAD
Residents get free admission to aquarium
Riverhead residents will be admitted free to the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center on East Main Street every Friday in November — a gift from the aquarium to its hometown.

The aquarium on the Peconic River started the free admission program for town residents in 2008, and — so far — 3,679 people have come in to see the exhibits.

The free admission applies only to people living in the town, and they have to show proof when they enter on any of the five Fridays next month.

Aquarium owner Joe Pertocelli said it was “a thank you” to the town, which has been home to the aquarium for the past 13 years.

Tickets to the Aquarium and Exhibition Center cost up to $32.50.

GLEN COVE
Mayoral candidates forum set for Oct. 25
Glen Cove’s mayoral candidates will face off in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters on Oct. 25, the organization announced Thursday.

Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi, a Democrat, is running as the incumbent seeking a fifth term against challenger Reginald Spinello, a City Council and Independence Party member who is also running on the Republican line. The race is a rematch of the 2007 election in which Spinello unsuccessfully challenged Suozzi.

Spinello, a former pharmaceutical and vitamin industrial executive, was elected to the City Council in 2011 and has been a regular critic of Suozzi. The two have frequently clashed over real estate development and government transparency.

The event will be held at the Glen Cove High School on 150 Dosoris Lane at 7 p.m.

ELMONT
Breast cancer screening Oct. 30
Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D-Elmont), in conjunction with the Nassau University Medical Center Mammography Van, will sponsor a breast cancer screening event for women over 50 later this month.

The mammography van will be at the Elmont Memorial Library, on 700 Hempstead Tpke., on Oct. 30 from 8:45 a.m. to noon.

The screening will include a breast examination by a nurse, a mammography and instructions for breast self-examination. Women with health insurance will be required to make a co-payment. The mammography is no out-of-pocket cost for uninsured women, based on eligibility guidelines.

Appointments are required and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call Solages’ office at 516-571-6203.

MINEOLA
Classes for seniors, veterans offered
Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Winthrop-University Hospital will offer free fall-prevention classes for seniors and veterans beginning later this month, Maragos announced Thursday in a news release.

“I encourage all of our seniors and veterans to take advantage of this opportunity to extend their quality of life for years to come,” said Maragos, who is helping promote the classes and helped obtain the class site — the Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
Registration is required as seating is limited.

Winthrop Wellness Community Outreach Center will be providing tips on how to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, balance and mobility through music and exercise, be prepared for the winter months, and learn what to do in fall.

“Winthrop has had tremendous success through its fall-prevention classes, and we are pleased to partner with Nassau County Comptroller to expand our program to this community," said John F. Collins, president and CEO of the hospital.

To register, call the comptroller’s office at: 516-571-2386. All classes are at 11 a.m.
They are “Get Moving” on Oct. 28; “Move with Music” on Nov. 4, and/or Dec. 2, and “Be Prepared” on Nov. 18 and/or Dec. 16.

Participants should wear proper shoes and bring water.
