Local bands still plan to play this weekend in Long Beach, despite Tropical Storm Irene having forced the cancellation of the festival and concert portion of the Quiksilver Pro New York surfing competition there.

Artists in Partnership Inc., in collaboration with True Live Productions & Benoir, will present Long Beach bands and musicians during the free Arts in the Plaza event on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza, 1 W. Chester St., in front of Long Beach City Hall. Attendees are asked to bring chairs.

Scheduled to appear are the Artie Brand Band, Kenny Truhn, Breakaway, Jahstix, Milestone, Principle Flow, Dave Kellan Trio with Andrew Wolf, Still Remains, Benoir & the Cancerians, NathalieD, Jeanne Boes, Ashley Mastrorocco, Ally Barrett, Christine Solimeno, RockNRobins and poet Atom Rush.

The music will continue at 5:30 p.m. in Lola’s Kitchen and Wine Bar, 180 W. Park Ave., and from 6 to 10 p.m. at A Whale’s Tale Seafood and Oyster Bar, 916 W. Beech St.

The Quiksilver Pro Trials qualifying portion of the contest will be on Sunday, and the competition is expected to start Monday. The event runs through Sept. 15.
