Free museum entry in honor of 9/11 anniversary

In remembrance and honor of the Sept. 11 anniversary, the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center will offer free admission all day tomorrow.

Visitors will be able to see a new fire truck dedicated to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is the latest addition to the museum’s permanent 9/11 exhibit, a museum spokeswoman said.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located along Museum Row on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in East Garden City.

The exhibit, “Lives of Service: Celebrating the Heroes of September 11th,” was installed in 2011 for the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. It has now been rearranged to become a permanent part of the museum, a museum spokeswoman said.

The exhibit highlights 18 firefighters from Nassau County who died, and includes a replica of the Twin Towers in hanging strands of metal beads.

The nearly 10,000-square-foot teaching facility features hands-on displays, historical fire equipment and live demonstrations on fire prevention and fire safety techniques. The center’s exhibits also trace the evolution of fire service equipment, gear and apparatus.
